How to Compost Leaves

Starting a Compost Pile with Fallen Leaves

Although the dead leaves scattered across your lawn may seem like an annoyance, they can actually provide lots of nutrients to your soil. During the fall, leaves are plentiful and easy to find. Your neighbors may even contribute their bagged leaves to your compost pile.

In addition to the leaves, you can add grass clipping and leftover food to your compost bin or pile. It typically takes about 6 months for the leaves to completely breakdown. If this is too long to wait, you can speed up the process by adding nitrogen-rich material like fertilizer or grass clippings. Additionally, make sure to keep your compost pile moist, but never soaking wet.
