How to Prepare for City Leaf Collection

How to Prepare for Public Leaf Vacuuming:

Some cities and towns offer free street vacuuming of dead leaves. However, it is important to prepare properly so that you can fully take advantage of this service.

1. Check local rules and regulations first.

Your county or city should provide specific instructions on where to put leaves and when to put them out. If you don’t plan on raking the leaves yourself, make sure to give your landscaping or leaf removal company ample notice.

2. Rake or blow all leaves to the curb.

Typically, the leaves should be raked to the area between the sidewalk and the street. The vacuum may not be able to reach leaves that are too far from the curb. There also may be some restrictions on removing leaves from private property.

3. Don’t block the street.

Leaves should not block the street or roadway. Masses of dead leaves can be a fire hazard if placed too closely to cars. Also, you don’t want to limit the amount of street parking on your block.

4. Timing is Everything.

Plan to rake your leaves to the curb a few days before the collection time. Don’t wait until the last minute and conversely, don’t rake leaves too far in advance.

5. Just the leaves!

The vacuum is only designed to pick up leaves. In preparation, you should remove any large debris such as rocks, sticks, and branches from the leaf piles.
