Why Do I Need to Rake My Leaves?
By ProMatcher Staff
Can't I just leave the leaves?
Every autumn, the leaves fall again and we are forced to cleanup the mess that they have made. While the presence of a few leaves on your lawn is not the end of the world, a full sheet of leave coverage can do some serious damage.
When piles of leaves are allowed to accumulate on your lawn, they may:
- Block the sun from reaching your grass
- Deprive grass and soil of oxygen
- Prevent growth
- Piles of wet leaves will become moldy
- Over time, the leaves may kill your entire lawn
Don't worry, you've got options!
If you don’t want to rake, there are some other options available.
1. You can allow the leaf pieces to break down on the surface of the grass if you break the leaves up into smaller, more manageable pieces that will decompose at a more rapid pace. The pieces can be shredded by passing a lawn mower over the layer of leaves.
Thick leaves do not breakdown as easily. A lawn mower will not be able to shredded these leaves. Along with bigger branches and twigs, these leaves should be collected and bagged (or added to your compost pile).
